Living in Arma di Taggia: a guide to the area and its homes

Arma di Taggia is the seaside part of Taggia, about ten minutes by car from Sanremo: a long beach, a coastal cycle path, and the railway station and motorway junction close at hand. It's a seaside resort where people also live all year round. Here's what it's like, what's there and what homes are available.

The three sides of Taggia

The municipality of Taggia, with around 14,000 inhabitants, consists of three distinct parts. Arma is the seaside resort, an old fishing village. Levà is the part where the town hall is located, with services and businesses. Taggia is the historic centre inland, in the Argentina valley. People looking for a home «in Arma di Taggia» are almost always looking at the seaside part.

The sea, the beach and the cycle path

Arma's beach stretches along a broad, sandy coastline, wider than many stretches of the Ligurian coast: there are beach clubs, public beaches and a small marina for boats. The Riviera dei Fiori cycle path passes through here, a mostly flat and easy route of about 24 km, built along the old railway line. It's convenient for children and anyone who enjoys cycling at a leisurely pace.

Taggia's historic centre

A little way inland, Taggia's historic centre is worth a visit: the medieval bridge from the 13th century, 270 metres long with 15 arches, over the Argentina stream; the Convento di San Domenico, founded between 1460 and 1490, with its art gallery; the Basilica dei Santi Giacomo e Filippo, with the statue of the Madonna Miracolosa; and the slate doorways of the houses. The taggiasca variety of olive tree is grown here, producing the famous taggiasca olive.

Getting around

  • By train: Taggia-Arma station is on the Genoa-Ventimiglia line.
  • By car: there is the Arma-Taggia exit on the A10 motorway; Sanremo is about ten minutes away.
  • By bike: the cycle path runs along the sea and reaches Sanremo and Ospedaletti.
  • On foot: in Arma, services, shops and the beach are within walking distance.

What homes are available

  • Apartments near the beach, widely used as second homes and holiday homes.
  • Villas and detached houses in the hills, often with olive trees and open views.
  • Homes in Taggia's historic centre, with character and prices that differ from those by the sea.

Who it's suited to

Families, people who love the sea and cycling, and anyone looking for a second home that's easy to reach, with essential services within walking distance and a proper city (Sanremo) just minutes away. Compared with Bordighera and Sanremo, it has more of a seaside resort feel and less of a «city» feel. To compare the locations, read where to buy a home on the Riviera dei Fiori.
